1-year Community Grant Recipient: Friends of Lillian Cooper Shepherd Park, NPU-G

This community received a 1-year HERCULES Community Grant.

Background:

Lillian Cooper Shepherd Park, located within NPU-G, is bordered by a tributary of Proctor Creek. NPU-G is home to many long-standing, multi-generational residents as well as many significant greenspaces, including the ecological corridors along Proctor Creek and Lillian Cooper Shepherd Park. NPU-G is dedicated to addressing pressing environmental challenges, particularly remedying persistent flooding issues that impact various areas, especially along Proctor Creek where they are actively engaged in seeking sustainable solutions to protect their residents and their properties.

The Friends of Lillian Cooper Shepherd Park (FLCSP) received a 1-year HERCULES Community Grant in May 2026 to implement their “NPU-G Senior Retention and Proctor Creek Stewardship” project.

Project Goals

Their project aims to preserve the community’s history while fostering a culture of environmental stewardship, ensuring that long-term senior residents can age in place within a clean, sustainable environment. Their project tackles both physical pollutants and social stressors: Engaging neighbors to remove waste from Proctor Creek directly reduces local exposure to waterborne contaminants and physical hazards while improving community ties and environmental awareness. Simultaneously, they will help seniors age in place in stable and safe housing, a critical social determinant of health, through canvassing and in-person workshops.
