1-year Community Grant Recipient – Feeding GA Families
This community participated in a 1-year HERCULES Community Grant Program.
Background:
Feeding GA Families received a 1-year HERCULES Community Grant in January 2024 to implement their “South Fulton Enviromunity” project. Their project aimed to bring neighbors together around a shared goal: build a cleaner, greener, and more connected community. They focused on reducing litter, increasing access to green spaces, and encouraging a sense of local pride.
What did they do?
Reduced Litter through Community Engagement
Feeding GA Families organized 75 residents to improve environmental conditions in the neighborhood with their Adopt-A-Road cleanups. These events helped to foster community responsibility in keeping the environment clean and conversations with participants about the negative impacts of litter and pollution within the community. The shared sense of building neighborhood pride motivated future cleanups and reinforced Feeding GA Families’ mission to improve the neighborhood’s environmental concerns.
Atlanta Science Festival
Feeding GA Families also participated in the HERCULES Community Science for Change event (a collaboration with Atlanta Science Festival) in March 2025. They handed out fresh produce and urban gardening kits and shared practical ways to reduce environmental risks at home. Beyond directly improving this community’s access to fresh food, members of Feeding GA Families engaged participants with discussions on supporting local agriculture, the impacts of environmental health on one’s exposome and the health inequities that can arise from the disproportionate spread of pollution, contamination, and environmental health concerns.

Keeping It Going!
Feeding GA Families has continued their capacity building by participating in the Atlanta Watershed Learning Network. This is a 6-month program which trains community groups on how to be stewards of the environment and advocate for green infrastructure. They’ve also participated in the HERCULES Community Data Science Workshop, where they began the process of learning how to conduct community needs assessments to better serve their senior population. In addition to these activities, they continue to grow their partnerships resulting from outreach events and connecting with the community, while growing alongside it. This project helped more residents in South Fulton get involved, learn about environmental issues, and take action locally.
